Google Dropping the Toolbar PageRank? A Big NO
Well not really, they can’t afford it. Google has just dropped it from Webmasters tools while it remains available on Google toolbar and is also accessible through developer API. But removal of PageRank metric from webmasters tools really shows an obvious nod from Google to remove the long standing Google PageRank. Apparently there’s been no PageRank update for nearly 5 months. So, one can sense the intentions clearly here. But there’s a different picture here, it’s not all that simple to drop an established trademark.
Idea really is to discontinue the PageRank metric for webmasters, which has continuously been regarded as lame classification of pages on basis of PageRank. As long as toolbar PageRank remains intact, it means the PageRank metric will still be available to the larger segment of PageRank viewers i.e. visitors. Over the years, visitors, too, have got used to of the PageRank and view the website with higher PR as more trustworthy and competitive. Whether be it for masses or for Google’s SERP metric, PageRank does hold some value, although value may be less but you can’t just ignore it.
If you’re thinking that PageRank will disappear from toolbar too, sometime soon. There seems no chance for that in foreseeable future for this is one of the major reasons to use Google toolbar for many of users around. Ask Safari users why would they miss Google toolbar, and the majority of the lot will end up lying somewhere near PageRank. By dropping PR, Google may also lose competitive edge to fast-approaching Bing, imagine something called BingRank?
So, removal of Google toolbar PageRank is just not possible for now, it’s been removed from webmasters tools so that webmasters don’t put more of their hopes on bettering the PageRank and less on keywords and stuff. May be Google wants them to use new AdWords tools, where keyword search trends have been merged into Keyword Suggestion tool.
